Guy Fawkes Night

On November 5th, the U.K. celebrates Guy Fawkes Night. Guy Fawkes Night, also known as Guy Fawkes Day and Bonfire Night, is an annual commemoration observed on 5 November, primarily in Great Britain. Its history begins with the events of 5 November 1605, when Guy Fawkes, a member of the Gunpowder Plot, was arrested while guarding explosives the plotters had placed beneath the House of Lords. Celebrating the fact that King James I had survived the attempt on his life, people lit bonfires around London.

For those participating in this year's Guy Fawkes Day, here are some safety tips to keep in mind:

• If setting off fireworks, choose select an open area away from trees, houses, a crowds, and dry vegetation 
• Never approach the firework after lighting it
• If the firework does not ignite, do not attempt to relight it
• After each firework burns out, douse it with water
• Do not allow children to light fireworks
• After all fireworks have burned out, collect them and store them in a fireproof container filled with water, away from the house
